We read to know that we are not alone. ~C.S. Lewis This past Fall, the Book Club at Spirit House became both a cybersite and an onsite gathering. The Spirit House cybersite book club is a cozy online living room. Snuggle up with your book, a cup of tea and join in our cybersite discussions in your own time by the midnight candle. If you are geographically compatible with Spirit House, you may wish to join us in person. Beginning in September will be gathering onsite monthly to take the book journey together. For many of us, books are a precious part of our spiritual journey. Thin lines of text carry us to the feet of impossibly foreign territories, timeless teachers, and the subtlest of truths. We dip into philosophy, history, science fiction - whatever rivulet we can travel in order to glimpse the expansive sea of ourselves and our world. As a means of personal transformation, reading is a uniquely inward journey that manifests slowly and unpredictably in our daily activities. Each character, story line, setting provides a new dimension - boundless color for our imagination to play with. Stories are as old as time, and anyone who has ever fallen in love with a piece of text knows that reading is a powerful way to engage our spiritual practices: surrender, attentiveness, intention, compassion, non-judgment… What does it mean to share that inner journey outwardly? What new experiences become possible when we explore ourselves through text with others? These and many other questions will guide us as we cultivate our reading community. In the process we will be building our own story of transformation through artifacts gathered along the way. Our hope is that as each book is tenderly archived we are left with a profound sense that something remarkable has happened both internally and externally, and magic was created because we journeyed truthfully and creatively together.
